Some fuel has degraded beyond what filtration can address. A lab test showing elevated acid numbers is the clearest signal that the fuel’s chemical structure has broken down from oxidation to the point where combustion will be unstable and damaging to engine components. No amount of filtering reverses that condition.
Heavy microbial mat growth that has been active for an extended period presents a similar situation. By the time significant sludge has accumulated from months or years of biological activity, the fuel has absorbed the chemical byproducts of that process. What remains is not recoverable through polishing alone, and the tank must be physically cleaned before new fuel is introduced. Water contamination at high concentrations, particularly in tanks that have missed multiple service intervals, similarly exceeds what polishing can address and points toward replacement as the faster and more reliable path.
Fuel replacement alone does not solve the problem if the tank itself is not cleaned first. Sludge, microbial residue, and corrosion byproducts that coat the tank interior will contaminate incoming diesel within weeks of refueling. Tank cleaning and fuel replacement work together, and a qualified provider handles both as part of the same service event.
