Electric and diesel Fire Pump Maintenance
Home > Maintenance > Fire Pump Engine Inspection + Maintenance
Fire pumps and the electric motors or diesel engines that drive them are the heart of a facility’s fire suppression system. These systems save lives and extinguish fires, yet, a surprising number of facilities don’t have fire suppression systems in proper working order.
With diesel fire pump maintenance, you have a safeguard against fires. Secure a maintenance plan that fits your facility and your budget by partnering with the qualified maintenance team at LionHeart Critical Power Specialists.
Why is Fire Pump Maintenance Important?
Fire pumps ensure ample water pressure and volume are delivered to your entire fire protection system.
Properly operating fire protection systems can reduce the average property loss by 71% in the event of a fire, however improper fire pump maintenance can result in less effectiveness – or even failure – for the fire protection system.
Whether you require diesel fire pump maintenance or have a unit that is driven by an electric motor, LionHeart offers the expertise to keep your pump operating efficiently.
Our preventative maintenance practices follow proven guidelines for diesel fire pump maintenance of emergency generator engines. LionHeart technicians perform a comprehensive fire pump inspection of the diesel engine, as well as full maintenance to include replacement of engine oil, oil filters, and fuel filters. With approval, an operational churn test (no flow test) is performed to ensure proper engine and control operation.
Additionally, we provide comprehensive services for all electric driven units to ensure your drive and drive control systems are functioning at peak performance. Our Field Service Engineers (FSEs) are ESGA certified to provide repairs to your control system and power sources, including repair, maintenance, and/or replacement of the Automatic Transfer Switch (ATS).

NFPA Electric and Diesel Fire Pump Maintenance Standards
NFPA 25
If you are considering a maintenance plan for your fire pump, LionHeart recommends that all clients become familiar with baseline requirements from the National Fire Protection Agency (NFPA) called NFPA 25. This is the standard for inspection, testing, and maintenance of water-based fire protection systems.
It will also document any requirements that may not be covered under your current maintenance or service agreements. These additional requirements are typically handled by clients, due to frequent maintenance intervals (weekly, monthly, and quarterly). Requirements include, but are not limited to:
- Running the diesel fire pump
engine for 30 minutes each week. - Running the electric fire pump for
10 minutes each month. - Testing the diesel fuel tank float
switch(s) and interstitial space float or supervisory signals each quarter.
Additional Testing Guidance
When completing weekly, monthly, and quarterly tests, we recommend that you or your designated staff member receive NFPA training, prior to examining.
Testing can be completed for a variety of functions (with and without water) by checking temperature and pressure readings, motor operations, operating speeds, leaks, sound, vibration level, and more.
Note: LionHeart does not perform annually required NFPA 25 flow testing, but we recommend our annual diesel fire pump maintenance for your engine be performed in conjunction with annual flow test. This coordination ensures a qualified mechanic is onsite and prepared to address any engine or engine control issues which may occur during the annual required flow test.
NFPA20
LionHeart is well-versed in the repair, rebuild, and complete replacement of fire pump engines. To ensure system readiness and reliability, LionHeart has also developed extensive knowledge of NFPA 20, which is the standard for the installation of stationary pumps for fire protection. Engine failures, long-term repairs, and complete replacement projects require the use of portable, rental fire pump systems. We supply and install, both, so you are never without the resources you need to keep your facilities and your staff safe.
